dc.description.abstractABSTRACT The establishment of cultural center is a way for state to promote its culture abroad. Then state uses cultural center to project a certain image abroad following its success in promoting culture. This thesis will discuss the role of Institut Franais dIndonsieas French cultural center in Indonesia in shaping an image through culture to local public. This thesis used qualitative data analysis technique through data collected from literature researches, interviews, and questionnaires. Field researches were conducted in Jakarta and Yogyakarta. The concept of public diplomacy and nation-branding were used as a foundation in analyzing the data. The result of this research showed the importance of IFI in the bilateral relation between France and Indonesia. France uses IFI to project its image as a great country yet inclusive to local public.
