| dc.description.abstract | ABSTRACT Children are a nations future. Yet, their place in the society is apparently still inferior, subordinated, and marginalized. That is shown by the vast number of cases indicating that society does neither take immediate response nor advocate childrens interests and their needs pertaining their protection and fulfillment of their rights. It is a common sense that childrens rights are fulfilled within the family to begin with. Family is supposed to be a refuge, a place of abundant love, and the first institution in which children acquire their rights. This study tries to disclose the fulfillment of childrens right in poor family which is assumed to have more issues due to limited access to infrastructure and superstructure. The study was carried out upon five poor families in a slum urban districtin Yogyakarta familiarly named as Kampung Badran. Kampung Badran has attracted researchers attention as it was notorious for a village of thugs as well as its characteristics indicating tendencies to poverty issues. This study is expected to disclose the reality of how childrens rights of the five families are fulfilled, and what are the constraints and supporting factors. To be able to depict the rights of the children from the five poor urban families, this study uses symbolic interaction approach, concepts, and theories from some symbolic interaction perspective figures, such as George Herbert Mead, Blumer, and Cooley. This study also uses the Theory of Parenting Style developed by Elizabeth B. Hurlock. Methodology used in this study is qualitative using phenomenological approach for data collecting.
