#DigilibInfo: A Quick Look at Newspapers and Magazines

Yogyakarta, January 9, 2026 — Newspapers and magazines are print collections that continue to endure amid the rapid growth of digital media. With their timely and current presentation of information, both media remain widely read across all age groups, from children to adults. Although print readership trends have declined, publishers continue to adapt through digital formats to keep their content accessible to the wider public across various devices.

But what exactly are newspapers and magazines? Why do they remain relevant today? Here's an explanation.

1. Newspapers

According to the Indonesian Dictionary (KBBI), a newspaper is defined as sheets of paper printed with news and similar content (commonly known as "koran"). The word "koran" originates from the Dutch "krant" and the French "courant," referring to a light publication printed on low-cost, disposable paper containing the latest news across various topics. A newspaper can be defined as a publication and a form of mass communication and mass media, usually published daily, weekly, or at other fixed intervals, providing news, opinions, features, and other information of public interest, often accompanied by advertisements.

Physically, newspapers are large in format, printed on newsprint with text size of around 12 pt, and typically consist of 30 pages, making them easy to fold into two or four sections. The various types of newspapers found across Indonesia can be categorized based on publication frequency and news coverage as follows:

Newspapers emerged with the purpose of providing the public with broad access to current information and news. Their function as an information source includes reporting news, educating, entertaining, and influencing action.

2. Magazines

Etymologically, the word "magazine" derives from the Arabic "majallah," meaning a collection of pages containing wisdom or a book. According to the Indonesian Dictionary (KBBI), a magazine is a periodical publication containing various journalistic coverage and perspectives on current topics of interest to readers. Based on publication timing, magazines are categorized into monthly, bi-monthly, weekly, and so on; based on content specialization, they are categorized into news, women's, teen, sports, literary, and specific science magazines, among others. A magazine can also be defined as a collection of articles focusing on any general topic as well as topics of interest to specific groups, such as sports fans, music lovers, and fashion enthusiasts.

Magazines generally have a defined target readership based on age, gender, and profession. They are printed on higher-quality paper such as art paper, matte paper, or HVS, with visually appealing design, high resolution, and neat layouts. This gives magazines strong visual appeal along with a sense of exclusivity. Magazines are also divided into several types:

In general, magazines function as a source of information, a medium of communication, a channel for personal expression, a promoter of democratic discourse, a promotional medium, a learning medium, a channel for developing writing talent, a booster of creativity, and a form of entertainment.

3. Content Presentation

A study by Ardianto et al. (2007), cited in research by Permana & Abdullah (2020), identifies the characteristics of newspapers as mass media to include: publicity, periodicity, universality, actuality, and documentation. Meanwhile, magazine characteristics take into account reader segmentation, function, cover design, layout, color usage, typography, section selection, illustrations, and size, all tailored to the publication's purpose and target audience.

In presenting information, newspapers focus on current events across diverse topics such as politics, social issues, education, and crime, through short articles written in accessible language, complete with source quotations, prominent images, and advertisements. Their main purpose is to deliver information by answering the questions of who, what, when, where, why, and how. Magazines, on the other hand, emphasize popular articles written in a more relaxed style, usually under three pages, accompanied by illustrations and full color on glossy or semi-glossy paper, with advertisements as an additional revenue source.

Magazines and newspapers share similarities in presenting current information. Both use column formats, strong openings, and quotations to reinforce content. Articles begin with key information to capture reader attention, are supported by evidence and references that enhance credibility, and use language appropriate to the context of public communication.

4. Why Are They Still Relevant Today?

Newspapers and magazines remain relevant because they complement one another in providing information. Magazines serve as a supplementary source for academic research, understanding public opinion, popular discourse, and various ideological perspectives, while newspapers function as a primary source that records events directly and contextually, useful for historical analysis and chronological tracking of issues. The relevance of both is reinforced by their ability to adapt to the digital era without losing their core character, through rigorous editorial processes, diversity of perspectives, and ease of access. This makes newspapers and magazines essential resources for researchers, academics, and the general public alike in building information literacy.

Newspapers and magazines are information media that play an important and complementary role in the world of information literacy. Newspapers function as a primary source that records events in an actual and contextual manner, while magazines offer more in-depth, segmented discussions that reflect public opinion and discourse. Understanding the characteristics and functions of both is an essential skill for students and the public in using information sources critically and responsibly, while also supporting stronger information literacy as part of efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education.
